If it does happen, she said it’s dangerous and can be fatal. “For the FDA to issue a blanket statement saying that these products ‘are not safe to ingest or inhale’ ignores the lived experience of people who have used these products safely for decades, and misses an important educational opportunity to share ways to reduce the chance for harm if using these products.”Ĭlaire Zagorski, a graduate research assistant at the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy, said in 10 years of working at an emergency room, she’s heard of someone mistakenly chugging poppers fewer than five times. “We know that many people in the LGBTQ+ community use poppers, and are able to use them without adverse effects,” TerMeer said. Tyler TerMeer, chief executive officer of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, said the FDA’s “abstinence-only messaging” around poppers is ineffective. Ironically, Blanchard said if poppers were regulated to acknowledge humans are using them, the bottles could be designed in a way that would prevent people from drinking or spilling them, and they could have proper instructions. Another danger is combining them with drugs used for erectile dysfunction, which can cause a person’s blood pressure to drop, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. They’re typically sold in small bottles as cleaners or solvents and are marketed as not being for human consumption (to market them for humans would be illegal).īlanchard has only heard “urban legend” type stories about (straight) people accidentally drinking poppers, though she said there is a risk of spilling them when passing them around in the dark, which can cause burns if it touches the skin. In addition to providing users with a head rush, poppers relax muscles in the anus and vagina, so they’re popular for enhancing sex Blanchard said they can also make sex work easier. “The fact that FDA chose to stir up unfounded alarm instead of publishing harm reduction guidance for poppers consumers as well as manufacturers reveals the agency's disregard for the safety and bodily autonomy of people who use drugs, especially those who are queer, trans or sex workers,” Blanchard said.Īn FDA spokesperson said the agency could not provide VICE News with data surrounding the accidental ingestion of poppers or elaborate on the timing of its tweet in time for publication. This score of course gives it the “SEAL OF APPROVAL!” *Ahem* My final score for “Insomnia” is a 9,79/10. “Insomnia” got an intriguing and complex story, terrific performances, a great score, it is visually terrific and has some good writing. “Unlike most remakes, the Nolan Insomnia is not a pale retread, but a re-examination of the material, like a new production of a good play.” Also, here is a good quote from Ebert about this movie Roger Ebert seemed to really like this movie seeing as he gave it 3,5/4 stars. On Rotten Tomatoes it has a 92% positive rating with a “Fresh” certification. Also, fun fact: it is a remake of a Norwegian movie that came out in 1998. I was also a bit surprised to see how this movie to a large part when it came to the dialogue is morality, I never expected to see that in a thriller. The writing in the movie is also really good, really helping the already great performances to excel even more. This is (like all Nolan movies) visually supreme. And of course he brought on Wally Pfister to do the cinematography for the movie and it is just terrific. The guy is a master director and it shows here. You know the movie will be visually great when it is directed by Christopher Nolan. It really helps build the suspense of the movie and also sets a mood that not all thrillers got. And the score is dark, chilling and great. In this movie the score was done by David Julyan (Sidenote: My research tells me he also did the score for Nolan’s movie “The Prestige”). But all the characters and performances were great.īelieve it or not, but this is a Nolan movie that doesn’t have a soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. I will not say what he plays, that you will have to see for yourself. And of course, Robin Williams (R.I.P) is also terrific in the movie. And in here I can safely say that he knocks it out of the park. Sometimes he nails it, other times he doesn’t. I mean, it is rare to see Pacino being this great in a movie from the last 10 – 15 years. And the performances in this movie are crazy good. The characters are fairly well-rounded with a good amount of personality. There are also a few neat twists throughout. If I say more I will be giving away some spoilers… and we don’t want that now, do we? But I can say that, holy shit this plot is great! Its most distinctive characteristic is the faint, brownish image of a front and back view of a naked man with his hands folded across his groin. The cloth is woven in a three-to-one herringbone twill composed of flax fibrils. The shroud is rectangular, measuring approximately 4.4 by 1.1 metres (14 ft 5 in × 3 ft 7 in). It is used as part of the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus. Secondo Pia's 1898 negative of the image on the Shroud of Turin has an appearance suggesting a positive image. In 2013 Pope Francis referred to it as an " icon of a man scourged and crucified". Currently, the Catholic Church neither endorses nor rejects the authenticity of the shroud as a relic of Jesus. : 424–445 The nature and history of the shroud have been the subjects of extensive and long-lasting controversies in both the scholarly literature and the popular press. Though accepted as valid by experts, the carbon-dating of the shroud continues to generate significant public debate. Such fringe theories have been refuted by carbon-dating experts and others based on evidence from the shroud itself, including the medieval repair theory, the bio-contamination theories and the carbon monoxide theory. : 71–72 Defenders of the authenticity of the shroud have questioned those results, usually on the basis that the samples tested might have been contaminated or taken from a repair to the original fabric. In 1988, radiocarbon dating by three different laboratories established that the shroud's linen material was produced between the years 12 (to a 95% confidence level). McCrone's findings were disputed by other researchers and the nature of the image on the shroud continues to be debated. ![]() ![]() McCrone found no evidence of actual blood on the fabric, reporting instead that the apparent bloodstains were painted with vermilion pigment, also in a gelatin medium. Renowned microscopist Walter McCrone found, based on his examination of samples taken in 1978 from the surface of the shroud using adhesive tape, that the image on the shroud had been painted with a dilute solution of red ochre pigment in a gelatin medium. : 233 Ownership of the shroud passed from the House of Savoy to the Catholic Church after the death of former king Umberto II in 1983. : 191 Since 1683, it has been kept in the Chapel of the Holy Shroud, which was designed for that purpose by architect Guarino Guarini and which is connected to both the royal palace and the Turin Cathedral. : 166 In 1578, the Savoys moved the shroud to their new capital in Turin, where it has remained ever since. : 90–96 It was acquired by the House of Savoy in 1453 and later deposited in a chapel in Chambéry, : 141–142, 153–154 where it was damaged by fire in 1532. : 80–81 The shroud was denounced as a forgery by the bishop of Troyes in 1389. The documented history of the shroud dates back to 1354, when it was exhibited in the new collegiate church of Lirey, a village in north-central France. The shroud's authenticity as a holy relic has been disputed even within the Catholic Church, and radiocarbon dating has shown it to be a medieval artifact. This negative image is associated with a popular Catholic devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus. The human image on the shroud can be discerned more clearly in a black and white photographic negative than in its natural sepia color, an effect discovered in 1898 by Secondo Pia, who produced the first photographs of the shroud. It has been venerated for centuries, especially by members of the Catholic Church, as the actual burial shroud used to wrap the body of Jesus of Nazareth after his crucifixion, and upon which Jesus's bodily image is miraculously imprinted. The Shroud of Turin ( Italian: Sindone di Torino), also known as the Holy Shroud (Italian: Sacra Sindone), is a length of linen cloth that bears a faint image of the front and back of a man.
